Can we talk about this podcast? Because all my friends are tired of hearing about it…
I love podcasts and radio programs. I’ve listened to quite a few in their entirety, and while they’re not all directly related to design, I think the more the merrier when it comes to new thoughts and stories, especially for fueling problem-solving, design-thinking and creativity. So, let’s talk about some podcast episodes in this series, Can we talk about this podcast?. Let me know what you think, or what I should listen to next in the comments!
I’ll start off with an episode directly related to design, from the OG, 99% Invisible.
Whether you are a designer or you would like to learn more about design, I can’t think of a better podcast recommendation. Roman Mars and his team cover theory and ideas I learned in design school, as well as take a look at a breadth of fascinating and quirky stories through a design perspective.
Their episode on Pneumatic Tubes is such a fun starting point. Pneumatic tubes have always fascinated me, and I remember being obsessed with watching the cashiers using them at Costco growing up, and being fascinated when my mom mentioned them at the hospital where she worked.
So, you can imagine my delight when I heard about letters zipping all around under Paris, from around 1879 until 1984! (How I wish I could go back in time and read a letter delivered via la poste pneumatique over a picnic at Butte Chaumont!) And, don’t even get me started on Roosevelt Island. (I’m a little obsessed with garbage management systems in general, and this is absolutely my favorite.) Give it a listen; it’s just about the most charming thing ever, and let me know what you think!
